In Defense of Korean Cuisine
One former classmate who is dropping his career to become a chef is especially upset.
Well, I'm here to defend the name and cuisine of the Korean people, who are sick and tired of being associated with gross spicy kimchi and, well, rice and dog.
For the record, the preparation of fast food in Korea is head and shoulders above that of the United States and other Western countries. At KFC, when you order take out, they charge you an extra couple of cents and package everything so there's no way it could spill, including strips of tape around the drink cups.
At McDonalds, for once in your life, you'll actually get a burger that looks something like the picture. In fact, it will look a lot like the picture.
The workers at these restauraunts obviously take their jobs very seriously, so let's stop insulting them from our culinary schools in Prince Edward Island or the Annex in Toronto, or wherever else we think we know everything about food and "culture."
Appreciating American fast food in Korea is nothing less than an appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the Korean people in general. They've taken a good and popular product and made it even better, once again.
Don't worry Koreans, this Canadian respects you, unlike the others who insult your KFCs and Pizza Huts from their perches of pretention across the world.
-------- P.S. Pretension is actually spelled with an s, according to my friend Simon, who otherwise has no connection to this post at all.

It's not like I NEVER eat Korean food. That's all I ever have for lunch. The point is that I'm not ashamed to eat American food once in a while... and I shouldn't have to be.

Are there only two choices (i.e. Korean food or fast-food)? Even in little old London, ON you can find a restaurant devoted to the cuisine of just about any country you can think of. Like, instead of Mr. Pizza, isn't there a real Italian restaurant? Just curious.

Oh, snap! This entry felt like a smackdown.
I hope I don't ever get you pissed, timmy.

I do eat Korean food, as I said. I'm just saying I don't have to rub everyone's nose in it.
That's preten(s)ion.

Dang man this livejournal discussion got hella boring quickly. oh uh maybe this transoceaninc dance of dorothy parkesque barbs should end before this entry achieves 50 posts of yelling at each other in a food related circle jerk.

I love you too, Simon.
I wanted to write about this for a while because other people have been bugging me about it too, so you aren't alone. It was Daniella telling me how upset you were that actually motivated me though, and I'm happy you called it "intelligent." You know I love to make unpopular arguments, so I'm honoured.
I also noticed that I was the first person to really get you going!
Actually, one thing I WON'T be doing on this site is talking too much about food, not because I hate it all but because a lot of the Korea blogs do just that... They take pictures of weird food and tell everyone about it.
I got bored of that quickly, so it's one thing I pledged not to do... But I do like some of the food here, but to be honest, there are more things that seem to avoid - kim chi, fish cake, the little fishes, etc.
If I find anything truly great, I'll tell you. Unfortunately, I've been most impressed with the quality of fast food and a lot of the things they have here that are Western but not available at home, like Hershey's Chocolate Drink, which deserves a post of its own.

And Hello Andy... How's it going.
I almost called you PJs becaue Jodi and Nick did it so often.

Simon, talking about food isn't boring, everybody eats and there's an entire tv network devoted to it. Why are you listening to someone who uses phrases like 'hella boring' anyway?
Plus, Tim keeps changing his position (i.e. Korean food is gross but he eats it every day?) thus prolonging the discussion. I guess that's a by-product of saying stuff just to get people riled up.
What he is really in denial about is the fact that fast food can only be so good, no matter who prepares it. And no matter where you are in the world, it should be a limited part of your diet.

Of many things that people posting on this thread could be ashamed of, using the term "hella boring" is nowhere near the shameful-est.
Also, I wonder if Simon dreams about being on the Food Network... I suppose it's within reach. Maybe that M.A. in Media Studies and Practical English will come in handy afterall.

My favourite food is spaghetti and meat balls prepared by Andrew Ferguson.

Darryl:
Thank you so much for getting Andrew Ferguson's name on the internet... I went on google and couldn't find anything about him... He deserves a tribute, especially after I hear rumours that he was fired.
Simon:
1) You should totally be on the food channel, because it may not be about food, but it's definitely entertaining.
2) Yuck. Ewww. People with Passion! Eww, yuck, puke.
I suppose I'm perfectly fine with people who have passion for something, as long as they don't force it down my throat. (Not that I'm accusing you...)
I'm certainly passionate about a few things, but I'm also ashamed of myself for it and never speak of them... I think others who aren't similarly ashamed of their own passions should be, well, they should be ashamed of themselves.

My only strong belief is that I'm wary of all strong beliefs... Does that answer?
I guess I'm one of those bonehead's who took the po-mo crap at University a little too seriously....
God damn Einstein and Nietzche and Darwin!

HAHA, thanks for raising the bar of already non-intelligent debate on my site.
It's definitely good for bringing back viewers throughout the day though!
