Hoorah for Canada!!! (sort of)

The 1990s Ben Johnson beats up on the 1990s Carl Lewis in the Skydome.

Since my birth, this is unfortunately one of the biggest sporting moments in Toronto history.

There was 1993(?) when the Leafs were temporarily decent, losing to Gretzky and the Kings.

There was 1991 through 1993, when the Blue Jays dominated baseball before flaming out for a dozen straight yeras.

There was 2002, when the Raptors made the second round of the playoffs before flaming out for the next four and counting years.

There were also the Argonauts, who had spells of greatness under Rocket Ismail and John Candy, under Doug Flutie, and then recently with Pinball Clemens as coach.

BUT DONOVAN BAILEY BEAT MICHAEL JOHNSON IN A RACE THAT DIDN'T MATTER (except to me, and of course Donovan Bailey's bank account.)

  • Fantastic! That race was all hype and theatre, and I just ate it up.

Also, I remember '93 well. The Leafs were an OK team. Gilmour was the heart and soul, and they had a lot of players playing way above their skill level; Mark Osborne, Peter Zezel, Bill Berg, Mike Krushelnyski, Dave Ellett, Rob Pearson and Todd Gill.

They weren't loaded with talented, gutsy players like the eventual Stanley Cup Champions; the Montreal Canadiens. And, the captain of the '93 Habs is now behind the bench, coaching this year's edition of the team. Could it be fate?
