This is going to be in progress for a while... I'll figit until it seems right and then do it up nicely when it's done.

  • I notice the absence of Tupac. Is there a reason for the slight? Everyone gets their pussies all wet when they discuss him, so I want to know what a more serious fan of hip-hop thinks of his work.

  • also, what defines a good hip-hop record to you?

  • I find the problem with hip hop albums is there's never sustained momentum over the entire album. There's some good tracks, but I can't listen to the whole thing all the way through, it's just too tedious. I do like K-Os' Joyful Rebellion, however.

  • Don:

I agree about most hip hop albums, and that's one of things I take into consideration here... Many hip hop albums have great tracks, but not a consistent flow. I think these are the best for continued and overall momentum, if that's what you want to call it. It's a good word.

    Mark:

Thanks for the compliment! I'm a big Tribe Fan too, and I think Midnight Marauders will be Top 5 when I finish the list... I like Jurassic 5, but neither them nor Blackalicious were popular enough to warrant their album being on here... The least popular group on that list was Gangstarr, and even they went Gold a few times. I don't think either Blackalicious or J5 ever did.

    JP:

No 2Pac because 2Pac suffered greatly from the hip hop syndrome Don states... His albums had a few good tracks, but never very consistent. (although I'll admit I'm not a huge fan to begin with, so I never got into any of the albums.)... I'll address Tupac and Eminem when I finish the list.

Oh, and a good hip hop album has to have great beats (#1), great MC'ing (#2), be consistently good from start to finish (#3), and stand the test of time, whereby the MC'ing and DJ'ing don't sound completely out of another century.... This kills a few greats in particular, from N.W.A. to Rakim, who both are on every Top 10 of all time list, but when stacked up for staying power as great productions, they fall flat... The late-80's production style of drum machines didn't come close to the early-90's period of hot funk samples!... The greatest period in Hip Hop was 1987-1994, with a special emphasis on 1993-1994... In those two years, Wu-Tang, ATCQ, Nas and Biggie all dropped their top albums... It was also the peak for the greatest producers - DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre.

  • Oh, and for Darryl:

I'll probably add Rakim's first album for its sheer importance to everybody who came afterward... Unfortunatley, Paid in Full is horribly dated nowadays, especially in the beats department. Every other track is an Eric B. instrumental that frankly sounds embarassing these days.

Rakim is the greatest MC of all-time though... I'll do that list in time... KRS-One might still be #2... Probably B.I.G. and Jay-Z in #3 and #4.... Chuck D, Eminem, blah blah blah.

And Rakim's voice back then was a lot weaker than now... I think his stuff in the last decade has been even more awesome than when he started.

  • CIUT (the UofT Station) just happened to have played "Paid In Full" track-to- track this week.

It was good, but i see what you are talking about it being painfully dated

  • FUGEES!

too bad their comeback shit was absolute nonsense. i wish Lauryn would get some sense and just release another solo album (but that isn't her crying and strumming a guitar).

  • You should give Canibus props just for his lame feud alone with LL. Whatever became of young Canibus?

By Blogger DH, at 6:22 PM

  • I had a lot of respect for Canibus. I think he won that battle, but unfortunately, everyone wanted to kiss LL's ass.

"2nd Round Knockout" is still one my favourite songs and I still remember the words. Not to mention Mike Tyson's fantastic guest appearance.

And there are still rumours about Canibus returning... I've even heard a giggly rumours about collaborations with Rakim and DJ Premier.
